There are more than 3,000 alumni of the Southern University Law
Center, which is noted as one of the most diverse
law schools in the country. The Law Center has
contributed to the education of more than 90 percent
of the African-American attorneys in the state of
Louisiana. Graduates make up approximately seven
percent of the Louisiana Legislature and more than
40 hold judicial offices at the local, state, and
national level.
Degrees
The Juris Doctor
degree (J.D.) through a full-time and a part-time
day and evening program is offered at the Southern
University Law Center. A J.D. and Master of Public
Administration joint degree is also offered by the
Law Center and the Southern University Nelson
Mandela School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs.
Enrollment
The Law Center
has an enrollment of approximately 500 full-time and
part-time students.
Accreditation
The Law Center
program is fully accredited by the American Bar
Association, the Supreme Court of Louisiana, and the
Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools. It is approved also by the
Veterans Administration for the training of eligible
veterans.
Physical Plant
Housed in the
85,00 square foot A. A. Lenoir Hall, the Law
Center's program of study is designed to ensure that
students graduate with a comprehensive knowledge of
civil law and common law. Though emphasis is given
to the substantive and procedural law of Louisiana,
with its French and Spanish origins, Anglo-American
law is well integrated into the curriculum.
Special Program
Students are
trained in the art of advocacy, legal research,
legal theory, and social purpose of legal
principles—all techniques to strengthen the
students' abilities in legal reasoning. An
outstanding clinical educational program, the only
one in the city, enables students to further develop
their skills by representing indigent clients in
court.
Other
accomplishments:
• ranking in the
top ten among law schools for competitiveness and
diverse faculty and student body in the 2000 edition

Americans by Black Issues in Higher Education
