Professor Michele Butts joined Southern University Law Center in August 2011. Prior to joining SULC, Professor Butts taught legal research and writing, appellate advocacy, negotiations, transactional drafting, ethics, and pretrial practice at Atlanta's John Marshall Law School.
Professor Butts earned her A.B. at Syracuse University and completed her J.D. at the University of Florida. While at the University of Florida she was Associate Articles Editor of the Florida Law Review and a member of the University of Florida Trial Team.
After law school, Professor Butts practiced complex litigation for approximately 9 years in Atlanta with litigation boutique Long, Weinberg, Ansley and Wheeler, LLP and international law firm Troutman Sanders, LLP.
Professor Butts has a keen interest in promoting legal writing and the rule of law overseas. Professor Butts has taught or made presentations to law students, lawyers and judges in Kenya, South Africa and Turkey including a visiting professorship at Seattle University School of Law and The Mandela Institute of the Law School of the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa
Professor Butts is a founding member of APPEAL—an organization geared toward teaching legal writing and promoting the exchange of information between African and American academics. Professor Butts serves on APPEAL's Board of Directors and U.S. Executive Committee, and chairs the Book Exchange Committee.
In addition to presenting at conferences overseas, Professor Butts presents at conferences in the U.S. She is an active member of the Legal Writing Institute and the Southeastern Association of Law Schools. She serves on SEALS' International Law Committee, Steering Committee, Program Committee and Distance Learning Committee.
Professor Butts is admitted to practice in Georgia and is a member of the American Bar Association.
