Chancellor's Message

Welcome to the Southern University Law Center website!

Thank you for your interest in the Southern University Law Center, a Gateway to Success. I trust that you will find information of interest about our faculty, staff, students, alumni, programs, and services.

As a historically black institution (HBCU) founded in 1946 with a glorious history tied to the civil rights struggle dating back to the 1950s, we are proud to note that our graduates are still in the forefront of cutting-edge legal battles. We have been successful in training more than 3,000 lawyers who have made their mark in all areas of the legal profession. They are practitioners in large and small law firms, as well as in public interest law, are members of the judiciary and state legislatures, and are leaders in local, state, and national government. They attribute their success to the legal education they received at the Southern University Law Center.

Our mission has evolved to an institution with a tradition of opportunity. The Law Center provides access to a high quality and sound legal education for a diverse student body.

We believe that the Southern University Law Center is a special place, as reflected in our outstanding faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Full-time day and part-time day and evening programs provide affordable and flexible access in pursuing a legal education. The Law Center experience is life changing because students are provided legal knowledge and skills that allow them to help improve lives through the law.

As you visit the various stops of this website, we believe that you will find valuable information about the Law Center, including our outstanding clinical and externship program, our joint degree program, moot court competitions, and our studies abroad program in London, England.

We ask for your feedback as you learn more about what this Law Center has to offer. Please visit us in person and again on this website.

With warmest regards,

Freddie Pitcher, Jr.
