Career Counseling

Ideal Components

An initial 30 minute one-on-one session with either the career counselor or the director (ideally this session should occur in December—after final examinations end—or in early January—before classes begin)

Follow-up sessions with either the career counselor or the director at least once per semester

Purpose

To develop a working relationship between the student and the officer that creates an optimal environment for the student to realize his or her short- and long-term career goals

To assist the student in assessing his or her knowledge, skills, aptitudes and interests as he or she begins to chart a career path

To encourage the student to take a proactive approach to establishing and attaining his or her professional goals with the assistance of the office such that upon matriculation the student transitions smoothly into his or her professional career

Session

Prior to the initial session, the student will register (by submitting a DRAFT resume and completing a Student Registration Form) with the office and provide us with information about the possible areas of law and geographic locations in which he or she wishes to practice

During the initial session,

The student is given a brief overview of the office and the services we provide

The counselor reviews with the student his or her resume and discusses any suggested changes

The student is given the opportunity to discuss any concerns or questions he  or  she may have due in part to the necessary adjustments to law school

The student is given the opportunity to expound on information previously provided regarding short- and long-term goals

Based on information provided in advance and obtained during the session, the   counselor will identify for the student various career planning and development resources and suggest some possible plans of action

Together, the counselor and the student will articulate definitive measures that will be taken by the student, the counselor, or both before the next session

During subsequent sessions,

The student will be given the opportunity to raise specific issues and request that these issues be discussed and addressed

The counselor and student will discuss any changes that may have occurred in career goals and how these changes may affect previously established plans of action

The student will discuss actual steps he or she has taken in furtherance of the action plans developed in prior sessions

If these steps have been unsuccessful, the counselor and the student will discuss alternative measures

These sessions are designed to be as open-ended as possible such that the student can  freely express his or her needs, concerns, and goals.
