About Chancellor Freddie Pitcher, Jr.

  • Named to the ABA Site Evaluation Team for Reaccrediting Law Schools (2004)

  • Appointed to a three-year term on the American Bar Association Law School Legal Education Section's Committee on Professionalism (2004)

  • Presented the 42nd Annual National Conference of Community and Justice Brotherhood Award (2004)

  • Appointed sixth Chancellor of the Southern University Law Center (2003)

  • Joined as a partner in the international law firm of Phelps Dunbar (1997)

  • Received the G. Leon Netterville Award for Outstanding Achievement in Law, Southern University National Alumni Federation (1995)

  • In his Summer 1995 Law Center commencement address Pitcher's message noted the challenges that await law graduates. George Gates, IV, "97, wrote in an article published in the Law Center's, Reflections, that "Pitcher's message of personal achievement through sacrifice and perseverance, prepared the graduates for their new lives outside of the safe and sometimes protective walls of academia.

  • Elected first African-American judge of the Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal (1992)

  • Presented Distinguished Alumnus Award, Southern University Political Science Department (1992)

  • Received Law Center's Distinguished Alumnus Award (1991)

  • Elected first African-American judge of the 19th Judicial District (1987)

  • Honored "Citizen of the Year," by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Lambda Alpha Chapter (1984)

  • Became adjunct professor of law at the Southern University Law Center (1984)

  • Received Outstanding Achievement Award in the Legal Profession from the Louis A. Martinet Society of New Orleans, Louisiana (1983)

  • Elected first African-American judge to the Baton Rouge City Court (1983)

  • Established law firm of Pitcher, Tyson Avery, and Cunningham (1973)

  • Earned J.D. from the Law Center (1973)

  • Elected Student Bar Association President (1971-72)

  • Cited the Most Outstanding Moot Court Competitor (Spring 1972)
