The Southern University
Law Center's Clinical Education Program provides a
unique and meaningful opportunity for law students
to gain practical experience representing clients in
district and juvenile courts. Students are allowed
to practice law under the authority of Louisiana
Supreme Court Rule XX. The program is designed to
allow third-year law students an opportunity to
apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in the
classroom in the preparation of cases and the
representation of clients in the courtroom.
The primary objective of the Clinical Education
Program is to further the educational goals of the
Law Center by enhancing doctrinal and theoretical
learning. Students in the program learn under the
supervision of an experienced legal practitioner,
through participation in one of six clinics,
mediation training, externships, simulated trial
competition, and a tour of the clerk of court's
office. In each of the six clinics, students are
exposed, through instruction and practical
experience, to ethical considerations - the
objectives toward which every member of the
profession should strive - necessary to meet their
obligation of professionalism to other attorneys,
litigants, and the judicial system.
