Although loans and work-study programs are sources
of financial assistance, the Southern University Law
Center provides additional assistance through
scholarships, awards, and gifts from alumni and
other sources. It is possible that any award listed
may not materialize due to unavailability of funds.
Law
Center Scholarships
The Law Center
awards entering first-year students with
scholarships based upon their undergraduate record,
demonstrated need, and other substantive factors.
Thomas
Michael Abrusely Law Scholarship
Attorney Judi F.
Abrusely, in memory of her brother, a 1987 graduate
of the Law Center, established a $500 scholarship.
The scholarship is awarded to a third-semester law
student who has shown substantial scholastic
improvement. Presentation of the award is made
during Law Week.
American
Bar Association Legal Opportunity Scholarship
The American Bar
Association (ABA) Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund
will award $5,000 in financial assistance annually
to each scholarship recipient attending an
ABA-accredited law school. An award made to an
entering freshman may be renewable for two
additional years, resulting in financial assistance
totaling $15,000 during his or her time in law
school.

Baton
Rouge Legal Scholarship
(Formerly the
Baton Rouge Bar Association and the Bar Auxiliary
Scholarship)
A $1,500
scholarship is awarded in the spring semester to an
upperclassman. The Baton Rouge Bar Association and
the Baton Rouge Bar Auxiliary jointly sponsor the
scholarship. The scholarship recipient shall be
nominated by the Law Center and is contingent upon
the approval of the Baton Rouge Bar Association and
the Baton Bar Auxiliary. The criteria to receive
this award include great financial need, superior
academic achievement, community service, and
exemplary character. The following information must
be provided by the student to the Law Center and
forwarded to the Auxiliary for consideration:
student’s name, address, telephone number, and
personal resume detailing academic involvement,
academic achievement, community service and grade
point average. This information is mandatory for
full consideration.
Baton
Rouge Association of Women Attorneys Scholarship
An annual
scholarship is awarded to a female second or third
year law student who has demonstrated financial need
along with leadership involvement in community or
civic activities that benefit women. Special
consideration is given to students who would not
otherwise receive a scholarship. Students apply
directly to the association for this scholarship.
Becnel
Scholarship
This scholarship
is named for the Honorable D. Elmore Becnel and
funded by his son Robert M. Becnel, a 1984 alumnus.
It is awarded to the married student earning the
highest grade among married students in Torts I. The
marital status of each student will be determined as
of the date of registration based on information
furnished to the Law Center.
Cicardo
Awards
The Cicardo
Awards were established by contributions from the
Cicardo family, whose members consist of five
alumni. The awards are for: Most Effective Clinical
Education Student; Student with the Highest Grade
Point Average in the First-Year Class; Student with
the Highest Grade Point Average in the Second-Year
Class; Best Oral Advocate in Moot Court Competition,
and Best Law Review Article.
Council
On Legal Education Opportunity
The Council on
Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO) is a program
seeking to provide educationally and economically
disadvantaged students an opportunity to attend
ABA-approved law schools/centers. CLEO operates a
six-week summer institute to prepare selected
college graduates for law study.

An alumni group
from the Class of 1985 sponsors two scholarships
awarded annually. Students must submit application
to the group. The alumni group makes the selections.

Bar Association Auxiliary Scholarship
The Lafayette Bar
Association Auxiliary awards a scholarship for a law
student from Lafayette Parish attending any law
school in Louisiana.
Law
League of Louisiana
A leather
briefcase and a certificate of merit are awarded to
the law student who has most improved his or her
grade point average over the first five semesters.

Center Assistance Awards
Depending upon
the availability of funds, a student may apply for
assistance. An applicant has to be in good academic
standing with a demonstrated financial need.
Eligibility for financial aid and academic standing
must be determined before consideration for the
award.
Louisiana
Association of Defense Counsel Scholarship
The LADC awards a
$1,000 scholarship each semester to two third year
law students based upon scholastic achievement and
need.

State Bar Association - Corporate and Business Law
Section Scholarship
A $250
scholarship is awarded to the student earning the
highest grade in a business course.
Thurgood
Marshall Scholarship Fund
This organization
awards a scholarship valued at $4,400 per year to an
entering student who is a graduate of a Historically
Black Public College or University, or other
university that receives undergraduate awards from
the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund. Depending on
the availability of funds, the scholarship will be
renewed each year that the recipient’s academic
performance ranks in the top 25 percent of the
respective law school class.

New Orleans Chapter Scholarship
The Greater New
Orleans Chapter of the Louis A. Martinet Legal
Society awards an annual scholarship to one law
student based upon scholastic achievement and need.
New
Orleans Association Of Black Women Attorneys
Scholarship
An annual
scholarship award is presented to a second or third
year Black female student.
Phelps
Dunbar Scholarships
Phelps Dunbar,
L.L.P., created the scholarship in 1999 in the name
of the firm. Scholarships are awarded to the
editor-in-chief of the Southern University Law
Review and to two first year students who will
retain the scholarship for three years.
Provosty,
Salder, DeLaunay, Fiorenza, and Sobel Scholarship
In an effort to
recruit and retain students who have strong
connections to Central Louisiana, the firm of
Provosty, Salder, DeLaunay, Fiorenza, and Sobel has
established a $1,000 scholarship ($500 each
semester) to be awarded annually to a second year
law student who is a resident of Allen, Avoyelles,
Catahoula, Concordia, Grant, LaSalle, Natchitoches,
Rapides, or Sabine Parish. The recipient will retain
the scholarship during his or her third year
provided he or she meets
ligibility requirements and funds are available.

Scholarship
The River
Parishes Claimants 1988 Refinery Explosion Memorial
Scholarship is to be awarded annually by the Law
Center’s scholarship committee for tuition purposes
only to no more than five law students residing in
the River Parishes who demonstrate both financial
need and scholastic merit.

Roché Book Award Scholarship
The Alvin Roché
Book Award assists students who are in financial
need to purchase books. Recipients are given
vouchers to purchase books at the Southern
University Bookstore.
Timothy
L. Spears Memorial Scholarship
The family of the
late Timothy L. Spears, Spears and Spears Law Firm,
and the Southern University Law Center American Bar
Association/Law Student Division established two
$1,000 scholarships to be awarded to students of the
graduating class to participate in the BAR/BRI
Review Course.
Michael
Stein Award
Established by
Jason Stein, ‘01, in honor of his father, Michael
Stein, a scholarship is given to the third year
student with the highest grade point average.
SULC
Alumni Association Scholarship
The SULC Alumni
Association awards scholarships annually to
deserving law students who demonstrate scholastic
ability and financial need.
Earl
Warren Stipends
The Earl Warren
Legal Training Program (under the auspices of the
NAACP) is designed to provide 30 nationwide law
scholarships each year. Support for each student
will continue through the completion of the full
three-year course of study. Preferred consideration
is given to applicants in need, under the age of 35,
who plan to practice where there is a lack of black
lawyers.
