Professor Thurmon brings a mix of experience to the Law Center. Prior to joining the SULC faculty in 2008, he worked in a large private law firm that specialized in intellectual property law, was a full-time law professor at the University of Florida, worked as an in-house IP attorney for a mid-sized corporation, and clerked for a federal judge. Before law school, Thurmon was an officer in the United States Navy, where he served with distinction aboard the USS Narwhal (SSN 671).

Professor Thurmon has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from LSU and a juris doctorate from Duke. While in the Navy, Thurmon completed nuclear engineering training and qualified as both a submarine officer and as a nuclear engineering officer. He has used his technical background as a foundation for a career as an intellectual property lawyer.

Professor Thurmon has published a number of articles on intellectual property law issues and is a frequent speaker at CLE programs. He is an active member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, having served as a committee chair and on the Editorial Board of the AIPLA Quarterly Journal. Professor Thurmon testified before Congress in 2000 on international intellectual property issues. He has taught IP law in Warsaw, Poland, and he helped develop and teach an IP course in Indonesia.
