Prior to joining the faculty at Southern University Law Center, Dena M. Sonbol practiced law at Leonard, Street and Deinard in Minneapolis, MN. During her practice at Leonard, Street, and Deinard, Sonbol represented the interests of many diverse clients ranging from start-up businesses to Fortune 500 companies on corporate and real estate matters.
Sonbol graduated from Hamline University School of Law magna cum laude where she served on the Journal of Public Law and Policy and participated in the National Tax Moot Court Competition. She also served as an intern in both the 4th Judicial District State Court of Minnesota and the Minnesota State Public Defender’s Office. Sonbol taught legal research through the Legal Writing Program and civil procedure through the Academic Success Program at Hamline University School of Law. She also served as an Alumni Academic Mentor to first-year law students, where she provided guidance and academic support in the area of civil procedure.
Prior to law school, Sonbol earned her B.A. in psychology magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota where she prepared her Honor’s Research Thesis on the psychological and behavioral effects of stereotypes on women in leadership. Her current research interests include Islamic jurisprudence and its application to proceedings in the United States, law and economics, and immigration law. Sonbol follows the teaching philosophy that places the student at the center of the learning process with the teacher as the facilitator and the student as the initiator and ultimate leader of his or her own educational and professional destiny.
