Herbert C. Brown, Jr., was an associate with the law firm Jenner & Block, LLP in the firm’s Chicago office prior to joining the Law Center faculty. During his tenure at Jenner, Brown’s practice focused primarily on federal and state taxation, tax shelters, taxation of summaries and judgments, tax exempt entities and other general tax matters. Brown was also instrumental in a uniformity of taxation claim filed on behalf of the Chicago Urban League against the Illinois Board of Education for discriminatory practices in taxes associated with school funding. Brown also served as a member of the Board of Directors and tutor for Minority Legal Education Resources (MLER), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to increasing bar passage rates among minority students in Illinois.
Prior to joining Jenner, Brown completed a Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) Fellowship at the Center for Conflict Resolution. During his Fellowship, Brown became a certified mediator and conducted several mediations in the Cook County Court system.
The 2008 cum laude SULC graduate was managing editor of the Southern University Law Review and a merit scholarship recipient.
Brown is a member of the Chicago Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the National Bar Association.
