A twenty-one year veteran in computer technology,
Lata Johnson has been director of the
Office of Information Technology at
Southern University Law Center since
February, 1997. She is responsible for the
development, maintenance and expansion of computer
services at the
Law
Center. She determines the feasibility
of computer equipment and applications to address
student, staff and administration needs. Since her
arrival, she has incorporated the following: ,
network connections
for all employees and the labs at the Law Center ,
a high speed 10mb internet connection,
state-of-the-art multimedia class rooms , distance
learning, federal courtroom type digital courtroom,
a wireless network, web as well as automation of
many day-to-day activities of the Law Center
. She has also taken on the added responsibilities
of handling and upgrading the telecommunication
needs of the Law Center from an analog system to a
digital system, switching the security camera
system from an analog VCR based system to a digital
web based system and implementing a web based access
control system for the new addition
to the Law Center building. She formerly worked as
the PC and Network support person for the
Southern University Baton
Rouge campus (from 1988 to 1997)
supporting approximately 10,000 students, its staff
and administration.
Originally from
India, she holds a
Masters degree
in
Computer Science
from
Southern University and a
Masters degree in Botany from
India. Lata
Johnson is a committee member of the
Louisiana Banner User Group (LABUG) and also
the project manager for the Banner
implementation at the
Law
Center. She is also a
steering
committee member for Banner
implementation at
Southern
University. She teaches a
course in the
Southern
University computer science department
as an
adjunct instructor. She has
been active in the local community,
volunteering her services in various
organizations such as the Girl Scouts of
America,
Homeless Shelter,
and Pat's coats for kids. She is active in
the Kerala Cultural Association
(KCA) as a past president and current
member. Currently, she is the first vice
president of the Council of Information
Services Directors (CISD), a state-based IT
organization that supports the growth,
advancement, and sustainability of
information
technology resources in
Louisiana. CISD also
promotes coordination among the state
information services organizations and
serves as a primary advisory group for
decision-makers on IT matters. As first vice
president, Lata Johnson acts for the
president in his/her absence and
serves as conference chairman for the Annual
CISD Conference in 2010.
