Prior to joining the faculty, Blais served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Frank J. McGarr in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and to Justice John M. O'Connor, Jr., of the Illinois Appellate Court. Blais practiced law in Illinois and Iowa, concentrating in civil trials. Blais also taught legal writing at DePaul University College of Law, Duke University Law School, and Ave Maria Law School. At DePaul, Blais served on the Judicial Clerkship and Admissions and Recruitment committees. At Ave Maria, Blais helped to develop and teach a new bar passage program. In 2008, Blais presented "A Narrative Approach to Teaching Grammar" at the Biennial Conference of the Legal Writing Institute.
Blais received his J.D. from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1987, where he was a member of the law review, and a teaching assistant for legal writing. Blais received an A.B. in English from the University of Chicago, and was a recipient of the Olga and Paul Menn Award for fiction writing.
