Southern University Law Center launches Esports Law and Management Certificate

Over the past three years, the Southern University Law Center has built its reputation within the Esports community. This month, it is launching its Esports Law and Management Certificate. The certification course will give participants the opportunity to navigate the engaging world of esports from the lens of the legal profession.
“This is a milestone moment for law schools and HBCUs alike, as we pave the way for increased diversity and inclusivity in the legal profession,” said Christopher Turner, coordinator of the Mixed Reality Virtual Innovation Gaming and Esports Institute. “This certification is a valuable asset for professionals looking to break into the esports industry or expand their knowledge in esports law and management.”
Within the Esports Law and Management Certification, participants will learn the legal complexities that involve managing a professional esports organization. Learning modules will cover topics, such as media rights, licensing, lawsuits, contracts, and more.
The Law Center has partnered with knowledgeable and experienced industry professionals such as Danny Martin, CEO and co-founder of Esposure Inc., and Ryan Morrison, CEO of Evolved Talent and founding partner of Morrison Rothman LLP, to develop a comprehensive curriculum that covers all aspects of esports law and management.
"It is extremely important to understand the progressive impact that law and governance will have on the esports and gaming industry,” said Danny Martin, CEO and co-founder of Esposure Inc. “I foresee students having the ability to discern the appropriate pathways within Esports Law and Management after the completion of this certificate."
"Esports is an industry that seems cut and dry at the surface level, but has countless intricacies and complications once you really dig in," said Ryan Morrison, CEO of Evolved Talent and founding partner of Morrison Rothman LLP. "Learning how it all works from people who have been deeply involved for over a decade now is an invaluable opportunity to stand out amongst your peers when looking to enter the space."
As esports circles its way through industries, it is vital that professionals gain the fundamental tools and skills to navigate and understand the unique challenges and opportunities that come with it.
In March, the Law Center unveiled its Esports Innovation Hub. The lab will host daily gameplay, competitions, retreats, and more.
The course will take place virtually May 8-19. Registration is $995 and is open to the public. The deadline to register is May 3. Ideal participants are professionals in law, information technology, music, sports, entertainment, and related fields. To register and for more information, visit www.sulc.edu/esports.
