Southern University Law Center Breaks Ground on New Clinical Education Building

The Southern University Law Center (SULC) recently broke ground on its new Clinical Legal Education Building, marking the start of an exciting new chapter in its commitment to experiential learning and community service. The new facility will expand hands-on training opportunities for students while enhancing access to justice for individuals and families across the Baton Rouge community.
The groundbreaking ceremony brought together leaders from the Southern University System, faculty, students, and community partners to celebrate this milestone in SULC’s growth and innovation.
Speakers included Chancellor Alvin Washington, Professor Virginia Listach, director of Clinical Legal Education, and Kenneth Dawson, director of the Office of Facilities Planning for the Southern University System.
"The Clinical Legal Education Building will allow us to deepen our partnership with the Baton Rouge community while equipping students with the tools to make meaningful, real-world impact,” said Alvin Washington, Chancellor of the Southern Univeristy Law Center.
Following the program, faculty, students, and project contractors joined in a ceremonial soil turning to officially launch construction. The celebration captured a sense of pride and anticipation for what the new facility will mean for the Law Center’s future.
The Clinical Legal Education Building is one of three major development projects underway on the Baton Rouge campus. Construction is set to begin immediately, with completion expected by Fall 2026.
