Southern University Law Center to host 11th Annual National Civil Rights Conference

The Southern University Law Center (SULC) will host the 11th Annual National Civil Rights Conference, June 20-21, 2022. The theme for the 2022 conference is Rise, Advocate, Educate, and Cooperate: Fusing Power and People.
The two-day conference, held on the historic Southern University campus, will focus on civil rights, social justice, and human dignity. Attendees will engage in workshops and panel discussions illuminating voter education, civic duties and citizenship responsibilities. The event will provide an opportunity to remember, reflect, and jumpstart the spirit, commitment, and courage that fueled a movement that changed the nation. Through considerable intellectual dialogue and debate, the organizers hope to create opportunities to strengthen existing networks and forge new ones.
The city of Baton Rouge has been selected as the site for the 11th Annual National Civil Rights Conference because Baton Rouge and the Southern University Law Center and System are the ideal place to have an explosive conference engaging civil rights leaders and learners along with HBCU leaders, alums, and students. More specifically, the Louis A. Berry Institute for Civil Rights & Justice made a commitment to (1) sponsor the conference, (2) share its history of activism tied Freedom Summer, and (3) illuminate the numerous civil rights landmarks and sites around the Southern University campus.
“Baton Rouge is honored to host the 11th Annual National Civil Rights Conference. We know the residents of our parish are our greatest asset, and when we foster education and cooperation, we empower our residents to achieve new heights,” said Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome. “Civil rights, equity, and justice remain at the forefront of my vision for our City and Parish, and I look forward to advancing this work throughout this conference.”
The National Education and Empowerment Coalition, Inc., Miami University and the Southern University Law Center's Louis A. Berry Institute for Civil Rights & Justice are proud co-sponsors of the 11th Annual National Civil Rights Conference.
The conference will coincide with (1) the Annual Mississippi Civil Rights Memorial Service: an annual event remembering and honoring James Earl Chaney, Andrew Goodman, Michael Schwerner and other Mississippi civil rights movement participants; (2) memorial activities on the grounds of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church; and (3) memorial activities on the grounds of the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church.
The National Civil Rights Conference is soliciting papers, panel sessions and workshops for the June conference. While the conference program planning committee welcomes papers, panels and artistic productions on any aspect of human and civil rights, priority will be given to submissions directly related to the conference theme, Rise, Advocate, Educate and Cooperate: Fusing Power and Power.
The deadline for submission of paper, panel, poster and artistic production proposals is April 1, 2022. Proposals should be submitted electronically and must include title of paper or panel, author (s) name and affiliation (s), 200 to 250-word abstract of the paper or panel and contact information. Proposals should be submitted to: kdparker@civilrightsconference.com.
Conference attendees and program participants are required to register for the conference. Registration includes admission to all sessions, and exhibit halls and daily keynotes. Service-learning training/registration (10 to 20 instructional hours or 1.0 to 2.0 CEUs) will be offered (at a small fee) to registered participants and specific audiences such as teachers, principals, and education leaders.
