Job Descriptions
Qualifications
- At least 3 years of experience as a practicing attorney focusing on public service lawyering, with preference for indigent defense and specific knowledge and experience in poverty law. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, a strong academic record and/or other indicia of high-performance ability; commitment to work for low-income, access to justice for individuals; and a strong interest in teaching and mentoring students.
- The Fellow must be a member of good standing with the Louisianan State Bar and willing to complete the necessary documentation needed to be permitted to supervise the legal practice of students.
- This position is an unclassified staff position.
Benefits
- Salary: the salary is $65, 000.00 per year plus benefits
Responsibilities
- The Clinic represents low-income persons and presents legal representation, workshops, and resources to the low-income community
- Major focus is placed on the advancement and promotion of the Poverty Law Clinic and its clear presence in the community
- Students are primary counsel and facilitators in clinical functions always under the dual supervision of clinical faculty and fellow,
- Fellow’s responsibilities include co-teaching, co planning and creating opportunities for community support and their engagement in scholarship
- Communicating both written and oral when interacting with the community, clinical faculty and law students
- Assistance with both criminal and civil matters may be required which requires the drafting of legal pleadings
Duration
- The Fellowship is directly tied to designated funding
- Upon exhaustion of said funding or cancellation of funding, the fellowship will end
- The Fellowship shall be for a period of 1 academic year
- This 1-year period may be extended on a yearly basis not to exceed 5 years
- Extensions on a year-to-year basis are at the sole discretion of the Director of Clinical Legal Education and the Chancellor of Southern University Law Center.
