Prof. Allen-Bell selected as a fellow of the American Bar Foundation
Prof. Angela Allen-Bell has been invited to become a fellow of the American Bar Foundation, an honorary organization of attorneys, judges, law faculty, and legal scholars whose public and private careers have demonstrated outstanding dedication to the welfare of their communities and to the highest principles of the legal profession.
Membership in the fellows is limited to one percent of lawyers licensed to practice in each jurisdiction, and members are nominated by their peers and elected by the Board of the American Bar Foundation.
“I am deeply honored and humbled to have been asked to join this prestigious organization,” said Prof. Allen-Bell. “I find great fulfillment in my social, criminal, and restorative justice advocacy work, but somehow such fulfillment is not sufficient. Within me there lies a sense of obligation to make my work relevant and beneficial inside and outside the walls of this academic institution. I feel purposed to use whatever gifts I have been bestowed for the betterment of my students and society at-large.”
This semester, Allen-Bell, a 1998 SULC graduate, has been actively working towards criminal justice improvements. In addition to her research, publications, and presentations, she has partnered with the Louisiana ACLU to hold a forum at SULC on Louisiana’s non-unanimous jury system. Additionally, she organized a summit on capital punishment, prosecutorial misconduct, and accountability in Louisiana held at SULC this fall.
Allen-Bell is an associate professor of legal writing and analysis at the Southern University Law Center, where she holds the B.K. Agnihotri Endowed Professorship. Her research focuses on civil rights, restorative justice, social justice, and the interplay between race and justice. She has the distinction of having been selected for membership in the National Black Lawyers-Top 100, an invitation-only organization.
In addition to being a recurrent speaker in the community, as well as in the legal arena, Prof. Allen-Bell is frequently quoted and interviewed by local, national, and international media. She has twice submitted written testimony to the United States Senate’s Judiciary Committee on the Constitution and has served as an expert reviewer of solitary confinement teaching materials that are available through the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).
