Prof. Odinet speaks on panel at Loyola Law on the Obergefell case and community property

Prof. Chris Odinet served on a panel discussing the ramifications of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2015 gay marriage decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, at the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law on November 2, 2016.
Topics discussed during the event hosted by the Lambda Legal student organization included on-going issues related to protections in employment discrimination for members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community; the unanswered questions regarding the retroactive effects of the decision; estate planning, custody, and divorce issues; and current reform efforts in Louisiana to bring state law into compliance with the Court’s decision. Other panelists included Dalton Courson of the Stone Pigman law firm; Brandon Robb and Andrea Rubin of the Delaney & Robb law firm; and Prof. Monica Wallace of the Loyola College of Law.
Prof. Odinet’s presentation focused on how the retroactive effects of the Obergefell decision complicate community property and community debt relationships between the spouses, as well as how the effects impact the rights of third parties. These and other issues are discussed in his article titled Gay Marriage and the Problem of Property that was written with Prof. Andrea Carroll (LSU Law Center) and that appeared in the Washington University Law Review.
Odinet is an assistant professor and holds the Horatio C. Thompson Endowed Professorship at the Southern University Law Center. His scholarship is focused on consumer protection, commercial law, and real estate. He is a frequent speaker on issues related to mortgage finance, real estate, and consumer financial protection.
He is a 2016-18 Louisiana Bar Foundation Scholar-in-Residence and recently was appointed as an inaugural real property scholar with the American College of Real Estate Lawyers and the American Bar Association Section of Real Property, Trust & Estate Law. View his scholarship by clicking here.
