SULC National Lawyers Guild chapter to host Legal Observer Training, July 9

The SULC Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) will host “Legal Observer Training” presented by the Louisiana NLG at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 9, in 130 A. A. Lenoir Hall, on the Southern University Baton Rouge campus.
The free training will be provided by Louisiana NLG State officers Alison McCrary, May Nguyen, and S. Mandisa Moore-O’Neal, all of New Orleans. It will focus on imparting protestors and community members with a thorough understanding of their legal rights as U.S. citizens, as well as sharing the proper way in which police misconduct should be documented.
“We believe that this type of training will equip the Baton Rouge community with the necessary tools to ensure the protection of all civil liberties and other forms of police misconduct during protests, rallies, and gatherings in support of the Alton Sterling family,” said SULC NLG Chapter president Gil Bayonne.
Sterling was fatally shot by two Baton Rouge police officers early Tuesday, July 5. A video of the encounter, aired repeatedly on television and social media, has ignited protest in the community. The U.S. Justice Department opened a civil rights investigation of the incident on Wednesday, July 6.
“The Law Center is pleased that the student leaders in our lawyers guild chapter have taken on this very timely and important public service, prompted by the tragic case of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge and subsequent events across the nation,” Chancellor John Pierre said. “We applaud their efforts and that of the state guild for the leadership in support of equipping our community with proper measures for safety and the protection of legal rights.”
The SULC Chapter of the NLG welcomes public participation in the training. For more information, contact Ada Goodly, ’16, Louisiana NLG board member, at adagoodly@gmail.com.
