Four Southern University Law Center students have been selected as 2026 fellows through the Justice John Paul Stevens Foundation, a highly competitive and prestigious honor.
Chosen as part of a cohort of just over 150 law students nationwide, each student will receive a $6,000 award to support their public interest internships this summer.
- Alajanae Riley will intern with the United States Attorney’s Office, Middle District of Louisiana
- Bianca Sanchez will intern with Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA)
- Genesis Zimmermon will intern with the United States Attorney’s Office, Southern District of Georgia
- Jordyn Bew will intern with CrescentCare Legal Services
Through this fellowship, the students will engage in full-time public interest legal work with organizations committed to addressing critical issues such as civil rights, criminal justice reform, and equitable access to legal services. These experiences not only enhance their legal training but also reinforce the Law Center’s mission to serve diverse and underserved communities.
“The selection of our students as Justice John Paul Stevens Fellows reflects our commitment to advancing public interest law,” said Chancellor Washington. “These students are stepping into roles that expand access to justice, and it is critical that we continue to support pathways that make this work possible.”
“These students exemplify the purpose of legal education at Southern University Law Center,” said Vice Chancellor Woods. “Their commitment to public service positions them to make a meaningful impact, and experiences like this are essential to preparing the next generation of public interest leaders.”
“We are incredibly proud of these students and their commitment to public interest careers,” said Dr. Rey, Director of Career Services. “They are choosing to serve in spaces where the need is greatest, and this fellowship allows them to do that work without the barrier of financial hardship. Their selection speaks to both their dedication and the growing demand among our students to pursue meaningful, service-driven legal careers.”
The selection of these students highlights their individual excellence and the Law Center’s commitment to preparing future attorneys dedicated to public service and justice.
