Dr. Luria Young is a Professor in the Southern University and A&M College (SUBR) science/mathematics education doctoral program and principal investigator of the SUBR Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory Science Education Center (LIGO-SEC) Partnership “Strengthening Communities of Learners”, funded by the National Science Foundation at $2.5M over five years. She serves as a leader on several other externally funded and successful programs, including the Shell Louisiana STEM Collaborative, which provides professional development opportunities for teachers and undergraduate students.
The majority of Dr. Young’s professional career was at Southern University in several diverse capacities, including the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Interim Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Interim Dean of Students, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Interim Dean of Education, Arts and Humanities and Superintendent of the Laboratory School, Program Administrator, and Evaluations Coordinator. She served as a leader on several highly successful federally funded programs, including the Louis Stokes Louisiana Alliance for Minority Participation, Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program, and Project Modeling Inquiry Science Education Teacher Professional Development Initiative, totaling over forty million dollars in external funding.
Dr. Young earned a baccalaureate degree in biology from Southern University, a master’s degree and educational specialist certificate in science education from Louisiana State University, and a doctoral degree in educational leadership, research, and counseling from Louisiana State University. Her research interests focus on the persistence of students in higher education, minority participation in STEM, and maximizing the potential of African American males. Dr. Young is committed to providing opportunities for underrepresented groups of students to excel in college and careers.
