“Exploring Maternal Mortality through the lens of the Mothers of Gynecology: Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy”
This panel will discuss racial healthcare disparities as a contributing factor to present day maternal mortality rates amongst black women. Attendees will become familiar with the development of gynecology as a specialty in the United States and the significance of revering the Mothers of Gynecology: Anarcha, Betsey and Lucy. Panelists will explore the overall societal impact of immortalizing the enslaved women bodies who were subjected to numerous experimental surgeries without anesthesia as 15-foot tall sculptural figures; address existing paradigms, perspectives and policies to support why ‘HER- storical’ context matters in pursuit of protecting Black mothers; discuss the healthcare practitioner’s experience with black mothers and healthcare; examine the current alarming rate of maternal mortality amongst black women, and provide recommendations promoting awareness and advocacy.
