Law Center hosts conversation surrounding parallels between the caste system and the healthcare industry

Rising maternal mortality rates and disparities in healthcare coverage are trending topics of discussion. To combat this issue, Southern University Law Center, through the Southern University Increasing Clinicians of Diversity Initiative, is hosting a conversation titled "Intersectionality between the Caste System and the Medical System" featuring notable author, Isabel Wilkerson, on Monday, May 20 at 5 p.m. at the Law Center.
"As we have conversations surrounding racial bias in healthcare, we must address the historical root, economic impact, health disparities, discrimination, and more," said Marla Dickerson, vice chancellor of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives. "We are fortunate to host Ms. Wilkerson and uncrate these issues that are not only plaguing Louisiana but the world."
Wilkerson, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Humanities Medal, is the author of the critically acclaimed, New York Times bestsellers The Warmth of Other Suns, and Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. She won the Pulitzer Prize for her deeply humane narrative writing while serving as Chicago Bureau Chief of The New York Times in 1994, making her the first black woman in the history of American journalism to win a Pulitzer Prize and the first African American to win for individual reporting. In 2016, President Barack Obama awarded Wilkerson the National Humanities Medal for "championing the stories of an unsung history."
The candid conversation will discuss the similarities and connections existing between the unfair systems that create inequality and the current imbalance in the American healthcare system. Following the conversation, attendees can purchase Wilkerson's books and receive a personal autograph.
The event is free and open to the public; however, registration is required to attend. Guests can secure their seats at www.sulc.edu/caste.
