Local event bridges the gap between diverse clinicians and health disparities

Southern University Law Center and the Southern University Increasing Clinicians of Diversity Initiative are hosting the DiverseMed: Breaking Barriers in Healthcare event which is taking place on Friday, June 14 at the J.K. Haynes Building on the campus of Southern University and A&M College.
“Through this event, we want our minority community members to engage with clinicians of diversity and hear them passionately discussing and actively working to confront health disparities,” said Marla Dickerson, vice chancellor for Innovation and Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives for Southern University Law Center. “As they see clinicians that look like them advocating for their health, it will foster trust and build hope for a healthier future.”
The day-long event is geared towards having conversations with clinicians on topics plaguing the minority community, such as maternal mortality, advancing pregnancy care, the stigma attached to seeking medical care, and more. Speakers include Dr. Uché Blackstock, author and founder of Advancing Health Equity; Dr. Pierre, Johnson, board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist; Dr. Rani Whitfield, board-certified family physician; Kiara Carnes, board-certified lactation consultant and co-owner of Maternal Love, and more.
According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, 20-25 percent of women within the reproductive age range have been diagnosed with fibroids. Race and age are risk factors for fibroids. Studies have shown that fibroids show up in black women than white women. Beyond the seminar, the Law Center will raffle off five virtual consultations with Dr. Pierre Johnson in which women will have the opportunity to discuss their medical diagnosis.
The event is free and open to the public. Attendees can register for the seminar at www.sulc.edu/diversemed and the raffle at www.sulc.edu/fibroids.
