Anderson-Fortson wins National Law Review Writing Competition

Charletta “Charlie” Anderson-Fortson, a December 2016 J.D. candidate, has become the fifth Southern University Law Center (SULC) student since 2012 to win the National Law Review Writing Competition. Anderson-Fortson’s article, Cyber Security and the Need for International Governance, is available at http://www.natlawreview.com/article/cyber-security-and-need-international-governance.
Anderson-Fortson, from Atlanta, Georgia, is a member of the Southern University Law Review, vice chair of the Moot Court Board, and a member of the Trial Advocacy Board.
She stated she wrote the article because of “the effect of cyber crimes on our community—locally, nationally, and internationally.” “The laws have not caught up with the technology, and for all the benefits that are derived from the Internet, we are at an even greater risk with the advent of this type of technology,” Anderson-Fortson said.
“I wrote my paper on cyber crimes and terrorism because for more than a year I’ve been studying the topic and also because there is a shortage of lawyers in this field,” she said.
“I endeavor to not only increase awareness, but also I hope to one day become a federal prosecutor of cyber terrorists.”
Anderson-Fortson said she feels honored to have been selected as a winner of the competition. “I honestly was not expecting to win, anticipating fierce competition, but that makes winning all the more significant,” she said.
“I’m thankful the committee found value in my submission. It further inspires me to continue to research and write on this topic because I truly believe more people, especially lawyers, need to be aware of the inevitable threats that accompany technological advances.”
