Prof. Odinet Gives Presentation on Land-Use to NOLA Area Urban Planners
Prof. Chris Odinet recently gave a lunchtime presentation to the Metro New Orleans Section of the American Planning Association. The event took place on Friday, July 21, 2017 at the New Orleans Healing Center in the Bywater area of New Orleans.
During the event Prof. Odinet discussed the June 2015 U.S. Supreme Court decision of Reed v. Town of Gilbert where the Court placed major limitations on the way local governments can regulate signage. The luncheon was attended by local government officials and consultants engaged in urban planning and policy.
“This case has really had a significant impact on the way cities and municipalities go about prescribing rules for signs,” said Odinet. “Reed essentially rendered many sign ordinances across the country unconstitutional as current written, including Baton Rouge’s and those of many other local governments in this state.”
Chris Odinet joined the Law Center faculty in 2013 and currently holds the Horatio C. Thompson endowed professorship in law. He is a frequent speaker on issues related to mortgage finance, real estate, and consumer financial protection. He is a 2016-18 Louisiana Bar Foundation Scholar-in-Residence and recently was appointed as an inaugural real property scholar with the American College of Real Estate Lawyers and American Bar Association Section of Real Property, Trust & Estate Law.
