Recent SULC grad named to head Southern University Laboratory School

Averil Sanders Jr., ’16, has been named permanent director of the Southern University Laboratory School, effective July 1, 2016.
With 17 years of secondary education administrative experience in East Baton Rouge and Orleans parish schools, Sanders was most recently the principal of Lee High School and Christa McAuliffe Superintendent’s Academy in Baton Rouge. He formerly served as principal of John McDonogh Senior High, New Orleans, and Glen Oaks Charter School in Baton Rouge and was an assistant principal of McDonogh #32 Charter School, Dwight D. Eisenhower Academy, and Harriet Tubman Charter School. He has been dean of students and an eighth grade English teacher. During his time as a classroom teacher, Sanders was also a high school assistant football coach.
The New Orleans native earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in English Education from Grambling State University, and a Master of Education Degree in Educational Administration from the University of New Orleans, Louisiana. He is an affiliate of the School Leadership Center of Greater New Orleans Fellow.
Sanders says he is eager to join a “strong educational organization where my leadership experience, problem solving, and initiative will allow me to help attain organizational goals.”
Chancellor John K. Pierre says, “Sanders has a wealth of knowledge and experience in K-12 education. His knowledge base was enhanced by his legal education acquired as a part-time evening student at the Law Center.”
“I chose to go to law school because having a legal education refined my leadership skills, which allowed me to be a better educational advocate. K-12 education needs people to not only educate, but also to fight for the education profession,” Sanders said.
“The legal training I received at SULC has increased my leadership capacity because it has expanded my knowledge and understanding of the direct and indirect impact the law has on education, thus allowing me to make more informed decisions for any educational organization I serve,” he said.
