Students participate in public interest law clerk internships this summer

Ten SULC students will participate in the Louisiana Department of Justice Summer 2016 Law Clerk Internship Program with Attorney General Jeff Landry.
Marlon Battley, Burgundy Hammond, Jessica Hawkins, Alanna Hayman, Alex Hebert, Lauren Hue, Ryan Lloyd, Benjamin Pearce, Hammad Syed, and April White began their six-week tenure on Tuesday, May 31, with orientation in the Office of the Attorney General.
“As an attorney who began my legal education at the Southern University Law Center, I am excited to have SULC students share their talents at the Louisiana Department of Justice this summer,” said Attorney General Jeff Landry.
“SULC is a fine institution that greatly educates its students and improves the legal profession. I look forward to the contributions these interns will make on behalf of our State,” Attorney General Landry said.
This intern opportunity is provided through the Chancellor’s Public Interest Initiative that provides summer stipends in the amount of up to $2,500 to students who commit themselves to working in public interest and other unpaid, service-oriented summer law internship. Forty-four stipends have been awarded this summer.
“Often times our students have to make career development decisions based on their financial needs,” according to Tavares Walker, interim director of career services.
“Quite frankly, it is often not financially possible for many of our students to accept an unpaid internship in some parts of the country,” Walker says.
“This initiative seeks to remove this barrier, while at the same time allowing our students to learn and commit themselves to public service. It is great for the public and our students.”
Student interns, through the assignments they complete, often express a newfound interest for their career paths. One of the fortunate recipients, Lauren Hue says she is excited about the opportunity to gain valuable skills for the future. “I’m looking for a challenge to think, learn, and contribute in ways that only interning for the great State of Louisiana can provide.”
“I’m very appreciative of this opportunity to not only be mentored and gain experience here at the Attorney General’s Office, but also I’m eager to contribute in helping to protect the people and resources of the State of Louisiana,” April White says.
“My interest in working at the Attorney General’s office is to broaden my current knowledge of the law and hopefully gain legal experience to further my education,” said Alanna Hayman.
“I am excited and extremely thankful to be able to learn from and work with the best. It is a special opportunity, and I am ready to get started,” says Alex Hebert.
