Active attorneys are req. to complete 3 ETHICS credits per compliance period.

Arizona

The education cycle is July 1 to the following June 30. During that time each lawyer , unless exempted, must acquire a total of 15 hours of CLE, of which a minimum of 3 hours must be in PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY/ETHICS

***Temporary Extension: The Supreme Court of the State of Arizona has issued an order extending the 2019-2020 CLE and Reporting Deadlines to 12/30/20 (previously 6/30 and 9/15 respectively). Note, the 2020-2021 cycle remains unchanged.

Arkansas

Every attorney must have 12 hours of continuing legal education annually.
This must include at least 1 hour of ETHICS
However, any attorney or judge who attains age 70 or completes 40 years of licensure as an Arkansas lawyer is exempt from CLE requirements.

California

Half of the 25 MCLE hours must be in activities approved for what are called “participatory” MCLE CREDIT
No more than 12.5 hours can be for self-study
Other special requirements:
At least 4 hours of Legal Ethics
At least 1 hour on competence issues
At least 1 hour in an area called the Recognition and Elimination of Bias in the Legal Profession and Society

***Temporary Extension: The State Bar of California has issued an order extending the late CLE deadline to 9/30/20 (previously 6/30) for attorneys in Group 3 who have not yet completed their requirement. Failure to complete the requirement by 9/30 and pay any outstanding license fees will result in being enrolled in Involuntary Inactive status.

Colorado

Must have 45 credit hours every three years.

The Supreme Court of Georgia has issued an order extending the waiver of the self-study CLE limitation through March 31, 2022. Georgia attorneys may complete their entire requirement through self-study, in-house, or distance learning formats such as on demand courses and live webcasts. Additionally, they have issued an order temporarily extending the automatic grace period for the 2020 compliance year to May 31, 2021.

Hawaii

Active members of the bar shall complete at least (3) credit hours of approved CLE by the end of each calendar year.
At least once every three years, every active member shall complete (1) hour of approved ETHICS or PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY EDUCATION. This credit hour shall count toward the annual CLE requirement.

Idaho

Active and House Counsel Members shall complete a minimum of thirty (30) credit hours of Accredited Activity in every three (3) year reporting period.
No more than fifteen (15) of the thirty (30) credits may be self-study credits.
No more than six (6) of the required (30) credits may be published legal writing credits.

Illinois

***Temporary Extension: The Illinois Supreme Court has issued a 90-day extension to 9/30/20 for attorneys (last name A-M) who are unable to complete their requirement by 6/30/20. To receive this extension, you must log in to the MCLE Board's website and report "Not Yet Completed" by 7/31/20. No reason for the extension is required.

Indiana

Total Credits: 36 credit hours every three years.

***Temporary Change: The Indiana Supreme Court has issued an order temporarily waiving the credit limitation for distance education as follows:

Iowa

***Temporary Change: The Iowa Supreme Court has issued an order temporarily waiving the credit limitation for unmoderated courses. IA attorneys may complete any portion of their requirement as On Demand courses until further notice order from the IA Supreme Court.

Kansas

Total Credits: 12 credit hours per year
At least 2 in ETHICS
CLE Deadline: June 30^th
Attorneys may carry over 10 credits into the next reporting period. ETHICS CANNOT BE CARRIED OVER.

***Temporary Change: The Supreme Court of the State of Kansas has issued an order granting an automatic extension for the 2019-2020 CLE and Reporting Deadlines to 9/30/20 for attorneys unable to complete their requirement by 6/30/20. They have also removed the credit limitation on pre-recorded CLE for this same period. KS attorneys can complete their entire 2019-2020 requirement via On Demand CLE courses.

Note: In order to avoid any late fees, your courses must be reported no later than 9/30/20. Lawline will do our best to ensure all reporting is completed in time, but if you are taking courses on 9/29 or 9/30, please reach out to our CS team by 12:00 pm ET to be reported.

Kentucky

Total Credits: 12 credit hours per year
At least 2 in ETHICS

***Temporary Extension: The Supreme Court of Kentucky has issued an order extending the 2019-2020 CLE deadline to 6/30/21 (previously 6/30/20) and combining the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 reporting cycles. KY attorneys should complete a total of 24 credits, including 4 ethics, by 6/30/21 and certify their compliance by 8/10/21.

Louisiana

Total Credits: 12.5 credit hours per year

***Temporary Change: The Louisiana Supreme Court has agreed to lift the limitation for self-study credits for attorneys who are delinquent on their 2019 and for the 2020 requirements. These attorneys may complete their entire 12.5 credit requirement through On Demand courses if they fall into this category. Credits for the 2019 year must be earned and reported by 5/15/20.

Maine

Massachusetts

This state does not currently have a Mandatory CLE requirement for attorneys.

Michigan

MISD Standard 1 requires that attorneys shall annually complete at least 12 hours of continuing legal education.

Minnesota

Mississippi

Total Credits: 12 credit hours per year

The Supreme Court of Mississippi issued an order waiving the in-person CLE requirement for the 2019-2020 reporting year. Attorneys may complete their CLE requirements via online, webinars, or live, in-person programs. Additionally, the completion deadline has been extended to September 30, 2020, and the reporting deadline has been extended to October 15, 2020. Attorneys unable to comply with the temporary amendments may seek a hardship exemption and/or extension from the Commission.

Missouri

Total Credits: 15 credit hours per year

In addition, the 2018-2020 reporting cycle deadline to complete CLE and report CLE has been extended to 9/30/20.

Wisconsin

Total credits: 30 credit hours every 2 years

***Temporary Change: The Supreme Court of Wisconsin issued an order increasing the number of on-demand CLE credits lawyers can take to satisfy their requirement through December 31st. Attorneys with a 12/31/20 deadline and those working to make up a deficit from their 12/31/19 deadline may now take up to 30 hours of on-demand programming, however, the legal ethics requirement must be taken via live online programming or in-person courses.

Wyoming
