Southern University Law Center has a rich history of educating its students with a “seriousness of purpose”, committed to social and economic justice. SULC’s continuing commitment to narrowing the socio-economic divide has resulted in the establishment of the Vulnerable Communities and Peoples Initiative (VCPI)- a collaboration with the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).
Through VCPI, SULC endeavors, through research and interaction with families, to identify generational and structural barriers that make it difficult to escape the trappings of poverty. VCPI seeks to identify and establish a network of supportive services through governmental agencies and community partnerships to assist needy families stabilize and improve their economic opportunities. Our services may include application assistance, legal services, and/or referrals in the following areas:
- Affordable Housing
- Housing Insecurity (Evictions/Foreclosure/Homelessness)
- Food Insecurity
- Unemployment/underemployment
- Training/Retraining for In Demand Jobs
- Access to Equitable, Quality, Affordable Healthcare
- Re-entry Challenges
- Expungements
- Other - as necessary to stabilize families
