Order of the Barristers

The Order of the Barristers is a national honorary organization whose purpose is the encouragement of oral advocacy and brief writing skills among law students by providing national recognition to a select number of graduating seniors who have excelled in moot court, mock trial, brief writing, and other advocacy-related activities while attending law school. Over 100 law schools have chapters of the Order of the Barristers.
In 1973, Martindale-Hubbell Inc. acknowledged the distinction of being selected to membership in the Order by agreeing to list it among the scholastic distinctions included in a lawyer’s biographical sketch. Membership in The Order is one of the highest scholastic honors that may be obtained by a law student.
Each year, up to twelve (12) graduating seniors may be selected for membership. Their names will be listed on the national website and below.
The list of chapters and members can be found at this link: https://law.utexas.edu/barristers/chapters-and-members/

HOW TO BE SELECTED?
Students may apply for membership to the Order of the Barristers by completing an application that is emailed to the student body each spring. Students receive points for each advocacy-related activity in which they have participated. The twelve (12) students earning the most points are selected for induction. In the event of a tie, the committee votes to break the tie. Once the list of students earning the most points has been confirmed and verified by the Committee, the recommended inductees are sent to the Chancellor for approval.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
- Inductees must be a graduating senior or have graduated within the previous six months.
- Inductees do not have to be a member of the Moot Court Board, Honors Board of Advocates, or the Trial Advocacy Board to be selected. However, they must have competed in at least two internal or external advocacy competitions to be selected for membership (moot court, mock trial, negotiation, arbitration, transactional, etc.). External competitions must have been under the supervision and direction of a faculty or staff member acting as coach or advisor to the team.
- Other factors include membership on advocacy boards and offices held; performance in advocacy competitions, participation and performance in any programs for the instruction of other law students in brief writing and/or oral advocacy skills; participation in advocacy training; performance in the school’s brief-writing and/or oral advocacy courses; and any other factors that demonstrate excellence in oral advocacy.
- Applicants will receive points for each relevant activity in which they have participated. Applicants who accumulate the most points, will be selected for induction into The Order. In the event of a tie the committee will vote to break the tie considering all relevant information provided by the applicant. Once the inductees are announced, the lowest cut score for inductees will be released.
The application period for the 2023 class of inductees has closed.
