Overview
OVERVIEW
The purpose of Music Contract Negotiation Competition is to provide a situational
simulation of the contract negotiations generally encountered by the agents, managers, or lawyers of aspiring professional recording artists. Due to the uniqueness of music industry contracts and the scarcity of citable and concurrent contracts, the competition will furnish contract data compiled from various industry insiders. The competition is student led by Southern University Law Center’s Sports and Entertainment Legal Association. Accordingly, the competition is supported by our strategic partner, Diverse Representation, and all competition judges are external music industry experts. The competition will provide participants with the opportunity to sharpen their negotiation skills as well as their knowledge of actual music contracts. Upon successful registration, participants will receive a set of confidential objectives that serve as guidelines for the negotiation. Participants will get the opportunity to represent either the recording artist or the contracting entity. Participants will also be provided with a simulated data pool and a list of generally accepted strategy techniques. The industry experts, the judges, will use a grading rubric to score each team’s performance. At the end of each negotiation, the judges will share the scores with the respective team and furnish feedback on the relevant issues noticed.
The competition is the first of its kind and aims to be an immersive experience that law school students anticipate year after year. With that theme in mind, the competition awards the winner and the runner-up monetary prizes!
