Southern University Law Center enters into agreement with BRCC, Office of the Public Defender

At its October meeting, the Southern University System Board of Supervisors approved individual agreements between the Law Center and Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) and the Office of the Public Defender. These agreements work to provide administrative support and conflict criminal services, respectively.
In the transportation industry, workers that have been denied the Transportation Workforce Identification Credential (TWIC) are seeking an appeal for numerous reasons including, inaccurate or incomplete information relating to an underlying disqualifying criminal offense.
"The purpose of the agreement with BRCC is to enhance workforce development opportunities for BRCC and SULC students to gain administrative law experience with the Transportation Workforce Identification Credential (TWIC) appeals process," said John Pierre, chancellor of the Southern University Law Center.
Outlined in the agreement, the Law Center will offer administrative support to BRCC students seeking industry certifications by supplying oversight regarding the drafting and applying for the appeals and providing referrals to assist with the student’s expungement process.
Entering into its second year, the Law Center has renewed its partnership with the Office of the Public Defender to provide felony conflict legal representation through the Conflict Public Defense Criminal Clinic which an extension of the existing Criminal Defense Clinic. The clinic is supervised by attorney and professor Kelly Carmena and consists of second and third-year law students. Currently, it operates in the Nineteenth Judicial Courts.
The Law Center's clinical education programs prepare students for the practice of law through a combination of real-world experience, intensive supervision, externships, and seminars. While enrolled in a clinic, students engage in the practice of law by representing clients in a range of legal matters under the supervision and guidance of clinical faculty. The clinic functions as a law firm and students experience the creation and development of the attorney-client relationship as well as the professional obligations that accompany it.
