3L Morgan Ducote’s Law Review Articles Wins Louisiana State Bar Association Environmental Law Section Writing Competition
Morgan Ducote, a rising 3-L at SULC, tied for first place in the Louisiana State Bar Association Environmental Law Section Writing Competition for her article Uprooted and Underwater: An Examination of the Ideology Towards the Legal Implications of Coastal Erosion. The contest was open to students at all four Louisiana law schools and was judged based on citation style (Bluebook), research, analysis, and writing style.
Ducote’s article, which will be published in Volume 45 of the Southern University Law Review, analyzes the loss by the Isle de Charles Indian tribe of 98% of their land since 1955 due to coastal erosion and examines who can be held liable for the destruction, and continued destruction, of the property. Ducote stated: “I find that my article’s central topic, exploring the legal implications of coastal erosion, is imperative for Louisiana’s coastal communities, specifically indigenous communities. Our land is the epicenter of our homes, livelihoods, and culture. We must not allow them to be lost to the water.”
