Two Southern University Law Center Students (SULC) students have been named among the 2021 White House Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) scholars. The program recognizes 86 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students for their accomplishments in academics, leadership, civic engagement and much more.
Edrius Stagg of Louisiana and Ebony Cormier of Texas are members of The White House Initiative on HBCUs eighth cohort of scholars.
Scholars were selected from an applicant pool of over 20 students who submitted completed applications that included a transcript, resume, essay, and letter of recommendation.
Stagg, a part-time evening division student said, “Being selected as a 2021 White House HBCU Scholar is such an honor. I am humbled being one of the few chosen from among over 200 applicants. I am excited about the opportunity to represent Southern University Law Center on a national stage.”
“It feels amazing to be selected to represent my school and my community” said Cormier, Law Center JD candidate. “I’ve had an opportunity to do a number of special things in my life but this opportunity to take part in an initiative backed by the White House is right at the top.” She stated, “This honor couldn’t have come at a better time because we are witnessing history. Kamala Harris is not only the first woman to be VP, but she is the first Black and South Asian and the first HBCU graduate to hold that office in the White House. I hope to inspire others as much as she inspires me to keep going and not to allow others to define my journey.”
Over the course of an academic school year, the HBCU Scholars will serve as ambassadors of the Initiative and their respected institution. The White House HBCU Initiative will provide scholars with information about the value of education as well as networking opportunities. This cohort of HBCU Scholars will also participate in national and regional events and monthly classes with professionals from a wide range of disciplines. All HBCU Scholar events are designed to connect HBCU students with non-profit, business, and federal leaders to discuss professional development while identifying challenges and providing equitable solutions to barriers that HBCU students face when preparing and entering the 21st century workforce.
Selected HBCU Scholars will be invited to the 2021 HBCU Week National Annual Conference, held September 7-10, 2021.
