The Office of Institutional Accountability and Accreditation Presents at the IAFOR 2023 Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Subsequent Publication

The Office of Institutional Accountability and Accreditation (IA&A) presented at the International Academic Forum (IAFOR) International Conference on Education in Honolulu, Hawaii, January 5-8, 2023. The presenters included Regina Ramsey, Vice Chancellor for Institutional Accountability and Accreditation; Prentice White, Associate Vice Chancellor for Evening Division & Emerging Initiatives; Angela Bruns Turner, Director of Assessment, Planning, and Institutional Research; Dr. Samantha Thompson, Director of Institutional Accountability and Professional Development; and Dr. Luria Young, Consultant.
Their proposal, “Transforming the Culture of Assessment to an Online Model: “There is More than Meets the Eye” was selected for presentation from hundreds of proposals and delivered to an international audience from diverse backgrounds. Using a retrospective analytical approach, the presenters discussed the processes, challenges, and successes of transforming a traditional, student-centered, in-person formative assessment process for over 900 students during the COVID-19 pandemic into a novel online method, which now serves as a national model. The Office of IA&A provided strategies and resources to help professional schools and other institutions of higher education utilize innovative assessment practices to collect and analyze data in assessment processes and improve student learning. The presentation facilitated the exchange of ideas about the ongoing evaluation of the SULC’s educational programs and described ways to successfully engage students in virtual learning environments.
Additionally, Vice Chancellor Ramsey chaired the session on “Education, Sustainability & Society” and delivered a professional presentation to an international, diverse audience on “The Beginning of the End: How the Supreme Court is Poised to Whittle Away of the Right to Privacy.” This presentation discussed the need of the United States Supreme Court to be “checked” by the other branches of government, pursuant to the federal system of Separation of Powers among the three branches of government. Both the executive and legislative branches of the federal government have powers to “check” the judicial branch and should exercise these powers before the Court’s majority undoes decades of jurisprudence that secured and expanded rights of women, minorities, and the underprivileged and underrepresented. The presentation concluded with a discussion about the importance of higher education leaders to adapt their undergraduate curricula to provide more experiential learning opportunities for students and graduates majoring in public and social policy. Experiences such as simulation courses, externships, internships, and clinical courses prepare students to engage as “boots on the ground” advocates in grassroots and other campaigns. Such initiatives persuade national, state, and local government officials to enact legislation and establish policies that will ensure the privacy rights of all, particularly the rights of women, minorities, and other underrepresented groups in American society.
Dr. Samantha Thompson also chaired two (2) sessions on “Educational Policy, Leadership, Management & Administration” and “Assessment, Theories, and Methodologies,” and served as a Senior Reviewer of IAFOR conference proposals. Dr. Thompson was also a co-presenter with Dr. Melanie Johnson, Associate Professor of Political Science at Southern University and A &M College, about their research entitled: “Reimagining Resilience at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs): Emergent Governance, Leadership, and Crisis Management Practices.” Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, this presentation focused on the importance of leadership in times of crisis, explored the complexities of board decision-making, and provided insights and strategies to strengthen and improve HBCUs through crisis management models.
All three (3) papers will be published in the IAFOR Journal of Education, which is a peer-reviewed, international, and intercultural journal.
