AALS renewal

SULC has been confirmed for continued membership in the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) as notified recently by Judith Areen, AALS executive director.
In a May 25 letter to President-Chancellor Ray L. Belton and Chancellor John K. Pierre, Areen wrote:
On behalf of the Executive Committee of the Association of American Law Schools, I extend our thanks to Southern University Law School for participating in the Association’s periodic membership review. We recognize that the review process takes a significant amount of time, energy, and analysis, and want you to know that we very much appreciate your efforts.
The membership review process affords the Executive Committee the opportunity to offer constructive advice regarding your school and its academic program. In that spirit, the Executive Committee congratulates the school for its effort to increase scholarly productivity among the faculty since the prior site visit. The Executive Committee notes, however, that over half of the law school’s tenure-line faculty did not publish in the relevant three-year period, although we understand many held significant administrative responsibilities during the reporting period, which may have created additional challenges to achieving this core value of the Association. The Executive Committee requests that you continue to take steps to improve the scholarly productivity of the faculty.
The Executive Committee congratulates you, your faculty, staff, and students on your achievements since the last evaluation of the school, and is pleased to confirm your continued membership in the Association. We look forward to the contributions your law school will make to legal education and to society in the years to come.
Although site evaluation and AALS reports are not for publication, you may publish this letter reporting the actions of the Executive Committee. In accordance with Executive Committee Regulation 5.6(3), members of the full-time faculty and professional staff of the law school, the governing board, and appropriate officials in the university administration are entitled to read or receive a copy of this letter. If you have any questions, I welcome your call.
Chancellor Pierre expressed his appreciated to everyone at SULC for the efforts that made possible “this great accomplishment.”
“I thank all of you for your professionalism and hard work,” Pierre said.
