Prof. Odinet presents at law review symposium on urban revitalization

Prof. Christopher Odinet gave a presentation at the 2016 Law Review Symposium, “Urban Revitalization: The Legal Implications of Restoring a City,” at the University of Memphis School of Law on March 18.
The symposium focused on exploring legal solutions to the growing problem of vacant, abandoned, and blighted properties in major cities in the United States.
Prof. Odinet’s presentation, “The New Debtor City,” discussed the way in which predatory lending has played a part in the struggle of many American cities–large and small–to meet urban growth challenges. This presentation is the first in a series of law review articles on the little-discussed, but growing municipal debt crisis.
Other speakers at the symposium included faculty members from the University of Texas School of Law and Notre Dame Law School, as well as attorneys from the ABA Forum on Affordable Housing and Community Development, the Urban Institute, and law firms and think-tanks from across the country.
Odinet has been an assistant professor at the Southern University Law Center since Fall 2013. His research focuses on the role that debt and credit play in property-related transactions. He teaches courses in Commercial Paper, Property Law, Security Devices, and Sale & Lease.
His recent publications have appeared in top 50 national law journals, including the Washington University Law Review, the SMU Law Review, and the Washington and Lee Law Review. He also recently published a desk book, Louisiana Secured Transactions, with West Academic Publishing Company.
Prof. Odinet is a frequent statewide and national speaker on issues related to commercial/consumer finance, real estate law, and public finance. He is currently leading a legislative reform effort on behalf of the Louisiana State Law Institute to provide more consumer protection provisions in Louisiana’s Homeowners Association Act.
