Tulane Prof. gives Law & Society Faculty Forum Lecture at SULC

Prof. Shu-Yi Oei of the Tulane University Law School gave a lunchtime presentation titled The Tax Lives of Uber Drivers: Evidence from Internet Discussion Forums on March 2, 2016, as part of SULC’s Law & Society Faculty Forum speaker series.
In her presentation, Prof. Oei investigated the tax issues and challenges facing Uber and Lyft drivers by studying their online interactions in three Internet discussion forums. Using descriptive statistics and content analysis, she examined the substantive tax concerns facing forum participants; how taxes affect their driving and profitability decisions; and the degree of user sophistication, accuracy of legal advising, and other cultural features of the forums.
Prof. Oei teaches Income Tax, Corporate Tax, International Tax, and a seminar on Regulation and Coordination at the Tulane University Law School, where she is the Hoffman F. Fuller Associate Professor of Tax Law. Her articles have appeared in the University of Pennsylvania Law Review, the Washington University Law Review, the Boston College Law Review, and the American Bankruptcy Law Journal. She has presented her research at various workshops and conferences, including the Indiana University Maurer School of Law Tax Policy Colloquium and the Northwestern University School of Law Colloquium on Advanced Topics in Taxation. In collaboration with Tulane’s Murphy Institute, she co-founded the Tulane Tax Roundtable, an annual gathering of leading tax scholars.
Before joining the Tulane faculty, Oei practiced tax law in Boston for six years. Her practice included advising clients on federal, state, and international tax matters; transactional tax planning; and tax controversies. In addition to her law degree, Oei holds a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard University.
The next Law & Society Faculty Forum speaker will be Loyola University Prof. Andrea Armstrong, who will discuss the constitutional rights of prisoners on noon, April 6, 2016.
