Interlibrary Loan
The library’s interlibrary loan service (ILL) allows users an avenue to request to borrow books and or receive scanned copies of articles or book chapters that the library does not own from other libraries or institutions. The Law Library uses ILLiad, an online platform, to manage interlibrary loan services.
Eligible Users
The library’s interlibrary loan service is available to Southern University Law Center faculty, students, and staff.
ILLiad Requests
If you need an item that you do not see in the library’s catalog or want an article that you cannot find, you may request it from another library through the library’s online ILLiad request form:
If you are a first time user, you will need to create an account with a username and password. It is recommended that users utilize their U Numbers as their username.
Delivery Time
Generally, it takes 1-2 weeks to receive loans by mail. However, the length of time may be shorter depending on where the lending library is located and the chosen shipping method. Photocopies or scans of articles or book chapters usually arrive within 2-3 days as they are typically sent by email or other electronic methods of delivery.
Notification
Users will receive an email notification when requested physical items such as books have arrived. The material may be picked up at the Law Library Circulation Desk.
Loan Period
The loan period is set by the lending library and the due date is marked on the item.
Renewals
Users should use ILLiad to request a loan renewal by viewing active requests and clicking the Renew Item button. Requests should be made at least two days before the item is due. If you experience trouble renewing through ILLiad, renewal requests can be sent to amason@sulc.edu and library staff will contact the lending library and ask permission to renew the item .Please include the ILL number, which is noted on the book band.
Overdue Items
All overdue and/or replacement charges are assessed by the lending library. Failure to return materials on time will jeopardize the relationship between the Oliver B. Spellman Law Library and other lending libraries, and may prevent the library from borrowing items from those libraries again. Notify Spellman Law Library staff immediately if a loan is lost or damaged. Abuse of the interlibrary loan service may result in the loss of your interlibrary loan borrowing privileges, and may result in a suspension of a user's general circulation privileges.
