Law Center Students Participate in National Food Law Summit at Harvard Law School
Several Southern University Law Center (SULC) students traveled to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to participate in the Food and Democracy: From Policy to Plate – Food Law Student Leadership Summit 2025 hosted by the Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic at Harvard Law School.
The three-day summit convened students, professors, policymakers, and advocates from across the country who are leading efforts to shape the future of food law and policy. Discussions focused on the critical role of law in fostering equitable, sustainable, and accessible food systems, with sessions addressing key topics such as food equity, agricultural reform, and community-based solutions.
Representing SULC, Professor Kimberly H. LaMotte contributed to the national dialogue alongside USDA Risk Management Ambassador Cindy Ayers Elliott, a noted leader in agriculture and community development. SULC students Martaz’Shia Gibbs and Michael Hill also showcased their scholarship through a poster presentation examining the intersection of community health and food access. Their work highlighted the essential connection between legal advocacy and public well-being, illustrating how emerging legal professionals can advance meaningful change at the community level.
Following the summit, students returned with new knowledge on how to use law and policy as tools to strengthen communities and promote food system equity.
