Alumnus donates $10,000 to SULC, credits Law Center for his success
Brian Cau barreaux, ’92, of Caubarreaux and Associates in Marksville and Alexandria, Louisiana, likes to give back to the things he believes in, and Southern University Law Center is high on his list.
Caubarreaux, a cum laude graduate, recently donated $10,000 to the Law Center.
“I love the progress of the school and the direction that it’s going in,” said the personal injury attorney. “As long as that’s there, I’ll continue to give back.”
The donation was made after he called Interim Chancellor John Pierre to congratulate him on his new position. The two have known each other since Caubarreaux’s law school days, when Pierre was one of his professors. The former athlete says during the conversation he asked if he could assist in any way.
“He talked to me about some of the programs that he was trying to implement to help students pass the bar and litigation classes to give them practical experience, so I offered to help financially. I don’t have time to teach, but if they can get bright people to teach in those areas I’m all for it.”
After earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, Caubarreaux enrolled at SULC. The native of Lafayette reared in Marksville, moved back to his hometown, and says he chose SULC because it was close to home and affordable.
“My wife is from New Iberia so it was just the right fit for me,” said the married father of three. “Plus, it was extremely affordable. Tuition was less than $1,000.”
He recalled going to talk to then Interim SULC Chancellor Washington Marshall and the rest as they say is history.
“Southern gave me an opportunity. Without it, I wouldn’t have what I have now. I’m a very successful attorney.”
Following law school, Caubarreaux worked for a year for a city court judge, and then opened his own firm. Now his firm has five attorneys and two offices.
All five of his attorneys and soon to be a sixth one are also SULC graduates. He says he didn’t plan it that way. It just happened. “Over the years, we expanded and they all fit in very well with the direction we were going in,” he said.
“Sometimes I look at it and say ‘wow that’s kind of crazy’, but they are all very successful and we have the same diploma. It just says SULC qualifies people very well to practice law.”
“It’s rewarding and humbling to give back to the people and places that started you along your path of success. I wouldn’t be where I am today if others hadn’t given back so if you’re blessed you have to help support the next generation.”
