Membership
The Southern University Law Review only accepts those students who have proven themselves exceptional in legal research, writing, and analysis. Accordingly, invitation to the Law Review is only extended to those students fulfilling one of the following two requirements:
Grade-On:
Members of the Law Review shall be selected from students currently enrolled at the Southern University Law Center. At the end of each academic year, the following students shall be automatically invited to join Law Review based on their academic performance:
- Full-time division students who have completed their first year, have successfully completed all courses for the full-time division as set forth in the SULC catalog under which the student was admitted, and rank in the top 7% of the full-time division class at the end of the spring semester; and
- Part-time division students who have completed their second spring semester, have successfully completed all courses for the student’s division as set forth in the SULC catalog under which the student was admitted, and rank in the top 7% of the combined evening division and part-time day division class at the end of the student’s second spring semester.
Write-On:
Students who do not receive an invitation based on academic performance may earn Law Review membership by competing in the Summer Write-On Competition. To participate, students must fall into one of the following categories:
- Students who have completed only one academic year in the full-time division, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00, and have completed all courses for the full-time division as set forth in the SULC catalog under which the student was admitted at the end of the student’s first spring semester;
- Students who have completed at least two academic years in the full-time division and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20, at the end of their second spring semester;
- Students who have completed at least two academic years in the part-time division, have a cumulative GPA of least 3.00, and have completed all courses for the student’s division as set forth in the SULC catalog under which the student was admitted at the end of the student’s second spring semester; and
- Students who have completed at least three academic years in the part-time division and have a cumulative GPA of 3.20, at the end of their third spring semester;
An academic year pertains to fall and spring semester; summer semesters do not count toward this requirement.
Only those students who are capable of maintaining membership for at least two (2) full, consecutive semesters are eligible for Law Review membership.
