Darrel D. Ryland Law Firm donates $5,000 to SULC

When sttorney Blake Ryland, ’12, needed a speaker for the Avoyelles Parish Bar Association’s annual CLE seminar, he called his former professor and SULC Interim Chancellor John Pierre.
After talking with Pierre who agreed to participate, the vice president of the Avoyelles bar says he immediately went to his dad and said, “Hey, look we need to give back to Southern.”
And that’s exactly what happened. The Darrel D. Ryland Law Firm in Marksville, Louisiana, which is owned by Blake’s father recently donated $5,000 to the Law Center.
“Southern has been so good to us,” said Ryland, an associate at the firm, which specializes in personal injury cases. “We plan on giving back even more in the future.”
The firm has a long history with SULC. Three of its six attorneys are SULC graduates: Ryland, his brother Stephen, ’10, and his sister-in-law Danielle, ’06. Stephen is also the president of the Avoyelles Parish Bar Association.
“Interim Chancellor Pierre has always been there for us,” Ryland said. “He’s gone out of his way to help us and even checked on us after we graduated. We wanted to show our appreciation and thank Southern for giving us the opportunity.”
“We want to help out and contribute as much as possible,” he said.
Ryland says he not only attended SULC because of his family’s connection, but also its stellar reputation.
“A lot of attorneys from Avoyelles Parish went to the Law Center, ” he said. “My experience at SULC was great. I enjoyed it.”
Ryland, who will be president of the Avoyelle’s bar association next year, said he plans to invite even more Southern alums to participate in the annual CLE seminar. And of course, Interim Chancellor Pierre is always welcomed.
